One of Ann’s specialties is Myofascial Release, a technique she has refined through years of intuitive practice. This type of treatment can performed in a traditional manner, on a table and with hands-on application of stretching and mobilization or in non-traditional method utilizing Watsu (water-therapy). Her unique approach to physical and rehabilitative therapy is unparalleled.
What is the Fascial System?
The fascial system is a three dimensional web that covers the entire body from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet: a continuous web that covers everything down to the cellular level. Everything in the body must pass through the fascia. It provides support for the form of the structure on the skeleton much like a body stocking.
Restrictions of the fascia result in decreased range of motion, inflammation, injury and pain. Postural compensations and behavioral problems with personality changes can sometimes be the result of a fascial restriction.
Because the fascial system is a three dimensional web, pain may appear in am area seemingly unrelated to the point of origin. In this day and age of specialization, we often forget that every system of the body is connected to every other system of the body. In other words, if disease affects one area of the body it will more than likely effect other areas of the body. Finding the direction in which the fascia has become bound down and correcting it becomes the challenge for the therapist.
The fascial system and connective tissue can be balanced or healed by finding the right combination of therapies including myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, manual traction, myofascial rebounding, PNF, trigger point therapy, acupressure, Feldenkrais, aqua therapy, movement awareness, postural correction, hippotherapy and massage.
These modalities are used to enhance the body’s natural healing ability. It is equally important to establish a good exercise program to help strengthen the body. We, as therapists, can put your body back to where it should be in space. Only you, through movement facilitation and body awareness, can keep it that way. Remember, the body is a self-correcting mechanism if it is given permission to be!
The goal of the therapist, therefore, is to restore function and balance by realigning the body. Increased stamina and expanded respiratory functions will contribute to the body’s ability to reach its maximum potential.
Meeting these goals result in a healthier person with a
restored positive physical and mental attitude, allowing life to be expressed on a more joyful level
